Cranberry Institute on a Healthy Mission

Non-Profit Group Adds Advocacy of Cranberries’ Health Benefits as Part of Focus

WAREHAM, Mass. – As the Cranberry Institute turns 50, the non-profit group has launched an aggressive health-related research program to add to its ongoing and historical mission of serving as a resource for cranberry agricultural methods.

The cranberry is one of a handful of fruits native to North America. And the cranberry is a staple at Thanksgiving dinners, making it an integral part of our national holiday. But many Americans are less familiar with the cranberry’s health benefits. The Cranberry Institute is looking to change all that by highlighting the benefits of this functional food powerhouse.

The Cranberry Institute is an organization of cranberry growers, handlers and suppliers. The Institute is currently funding eight research projects on the health benefits of the cranberry. The research ranges from studies on antioxidants in cranberries and their effectiveness against heart disease to potential benefits of cranberry consumption in fighting neurodegenerative disease. Research is being conducted at such leading universities as the University of Wisconsin, Tufts, and Scranton University.

“If preliminary results are any indication, the research that we are sponsoring will provide further documentation of the cranberry’s benefit for total body health,” said Jere Downing, Executive Director of the Cranberry Institute. “From maintaining urinary tract health to the new ulcer fighting possibilities, the closer we’ve looked at this unique berry, the stronger it appears to help prevent disease.”

The Cranberry Institute is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1951 to further the success of U.S. and Canadian cranberry growers through research and education.
